Small epiphytic ferns found in cloud forests of tropical to temperate mountains. Closely related to Polypodiaceae, with exindusiate, round sori. Fronds are small, ranging from simple to deeply lobed, and the abaxial surface is often densely hairy. A few species occur in the Ogasawara and Nansei Islands of Japan.

Key Characteristics

  • Small epiphytic ferns
  • Sori exindusiate (lacking indusia)
  • Abaxial surface often densely covered with multicellular hairs
  • Sporangial stalks consisting of a single row of cells

Phylogenetic Position

Vascular plants > Polypodiophyta > Polypodiopsida > Polypodiales > Grammitidaceae

Divergence Era

Paleogene (ca. 50 million years ago–)

Representative Genera

グラミティス属(Grammitis)

Related Evolution Events

  • Specialization for cloud forest and high-humidity montane environments (ultra-small epiphytic niche)
  • Reduction of sporangial stalks to a single cell row (phylogenetic divergence from Polypodiaceae)
