A family of evergreen trees and shrubs. In Japan, Cleyera japonica (sakaki) and Eurya japonica (hisakaki) are common in evergreen broad-leaved forests. Sakaki has been used in Shinto rituals as a sacred tree since ancient times. Originally part of Theaceae, the subfamily was separated as an independent family from APG II onward.
