A cultivar of Cerasus in the rose family. Recommended by the Japan Cherry Blossom Association as a successor to Somei-yoshino for street and park plantings. Bears slightly deeper pink flowers than Somei-yoshino at a similar time. Re-introduced to Japan from the Arnold Arboretum in the U.S., then identified and named at Jindai Botanical Gardens. Resistant to witches'-broom disease, and now widely planted nationwide as a healthier replacement for Somei-yoshino.
