An evergreen fruit tree in the soapberry family, the only species of its genus. Native to the Lingnan region of China. The fruit is called 'lychee' — inside the bumpy red peel is translucent white, fragrant flesh. Famous for being a favorite of Yang Guifei. Unrelated to soursop despite similar Japanese names.
