A family of small perennial herbs. In Japan, Mazus miquelii and Mazus pumilus are common in paddy edges and damp grasslands. Formerly placed in Scrophulariaceae, then in Phrymaceae, the group was recognized as an independent family in APG IV based on molecular phylogenetics.
